For the past few weeks, the grades 5, 6 and 7 students at Kwaleen Traditional Elementary School have taken their learning to the outside. The intermediate teachers Mike Wilson and Monica Routtu were looking at ways to further enhance the literacy skills of their students and enjoy the warm spring weather.  They decided that learning to use the GPS units would be a fun way to increase literacy and touch other parts of the curriculum such as social studies, science, physical education, health and career. The classes were first introduced to the GPS units and then the students were given various routes to follow. The Grade 6/7 students were able to practice their leadership skills by assisting the Grade 5/6 students  with their first attempt at finding coordinates.Since non-fiction makes up most of the text in our world (80 per cent), learning to use the GPS units seemed to be a fun way to increase literacy and teach life skills.
