OK, I am very excited to tell you that the next film the Williams Lake Film Club is screening is none other than Incendies.

It will be shown this coming Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Gibraltar Room starting at 7 p.m. Why am I so excited? The second film by Québecois director Denis Villeneuve (his first is “Polytechnique”) has been declared the best Canadian film of 2010 by Canadian Film Critics; it has been short-listed for the Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film; it is after all from Québec.

It also has been nominated for 10 Genie Awards and 10 Jutra awards, awarded annually in Québec. And just last Saturday Robert Ebert predicted that this little-known Québec film will take home the Oscar on Feb. 27. Oh, not to forget, Villeneuve also wrote this film.

What does all this mean? That we simply have to see this film to decide for ourselves. Do not read up too much about it. The story is full of twists and turns, don’t spoil it. Please, experience it!

Incendies is adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed play. It tells the powerful and moving tale of two young adult’s voyage to the core of deep-rooted hatred, never-ending wars and enduring love.

A mother’s last wishes send Jeanne and Simon on a journey to the Middle East in search of their tangled roots. A father they have never met and a brother they never knew about. The journey sends them through Arabic countries, so prevalent in the news right now. Maybe we will even gain some more understanding of the real story behind the news? Reviews for the film have been extremely positive, it has been called a “masterpiece.”

I have not yet seen it, but based on my research since November of last year, I can hardly wait to see it. And — let’s have some tea and cookies (in true Canadian fashion) afterwards and discuss the film.

I love it, and I am glad that members of our Club requested it again. You have some cookies to contribute?

See you there, this Thursday, Feb. 17. Admission to the show is $9 regular, $8 for members, and $6 for seniors/elders. One screening only.

And thanks to the person who brings something for the food bank every time. It is so appreciated.

I am so glad you appreciate the films we are bringing to Williams Lake and that the proceeds of our films go to the LDA, the Williams Lake Chapter of the Association for Students with Learning Disabilities. They thank you for your support.
