The Cariboo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is beginning its 89th year of providing support services for patients and their families.

Hospital auxiliary volunteers run the hospital gift shop, deliver flowers to patients, and take the mobile amenities cart with magazines and other items around to patients.

Auxiliary fundraising efforts include sponsoring silent auctions, raffles, and bake sales.

The auxiliary provides two bursaries each year to applicants studying in health-related fields.

The auxiliary also provides gifts for the first baby of the year as well as tray favors for patients on special holidays.

The auxiliary also donates hand-made quilts for patients using the renal dialysis unit.

Money raised by the gift shop and other fundraising efforts also goes toward helping to purchase equipment and other items the hospital may need.

Anyone interested in joining the Cariboo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is asked to contact one of the volunteers at the gift shop.

“Volunteering is such a rewarding experience,” says auxiliary publisher Cynthia Wilson.

“A special thank-you to all the knitters who supply wonderful knitted items for sale in the gift shop.”

The auxiliary met at Deni House Jan. 11 to install the new executive and acknowledge member achievement and service.

Cathy Whyte and Mary Lewis have been volunteers for five years; Ria Van Summeren for 10 years, Christina Ford for 25 years and Eileen Dell for 30 years.

Ford also received her lifetime membership.

The 2012 executive includes publisher Cynthia Wilson, president Marie Payne, vice-president and recording secretary Judy Newbery, correspondence secretary Christina Ford, and treasurer Mary Lewis.
