Gurdwara Western Singh Sabha members celebrate Vaisakhi

Two Vaisakhi celebrations take place in lakecity

Members of the Gurdwara Western Singh Sabha opened their doors over the weekend in Williams Lake to celebrate Vaisakhi.

Throughout the three days temple members recited religious hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book). Cooking and serving vegetarian food was also a big part of the celebration, as well as the cleansing, covering and raising of the flag, which occurred Saturday afternoon.

There are two different elements to Vaisakhi — firstly it refers to the harvest festival in the Punjab region of India, and secondly it marks the day that Sikhism was born as a collective faith in 1699.

The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple on Mackenzie Ave. will also be hosting a Vaisakhi celebration, which is set to take place this weekend Friday through Sunday.

Everyone is welcome.
