Father’s Day Pow Wow coming up this weekend

Angie Mindus Tribune file photo The rich history and pageantry of First Nations people are reflected in the grand entries at the annual Father’s Day Pow Wow hosted by the Williams Lake Indian Band. The pow wow is coming up this weekend at the Chief Will-Yum arbor and campsite.

The 33rd Annual Chief William Fathers Day Pow Wow takes place Friday, June 16 to Sunday,18 at the Chief Will-Yum Campsite and Arbor.

Hosted by the Williams Lake Indian Band the pow wow is an opportunity to honour and celebrate both fathers and First Nations culture with competitions, dancing, special tributes and pageantry.

There will be a traditional lehal tournament on Friday evening where teams of up to six players will face each other to compete in the game that is played to celebrate pow wows and gatherings.

The entry fee per team is $100. The games start with a warm up at 5 p.m.

Saturday will be filled with traditional pow wow dancing, the Chief William Princess Pageant and a feast in the evening.

Saturday there will be two grand entries.

The first grand entry begins at 1 p.m. followed by the Chief William Princess Pageant, and a traditional feast.

The second grand entry begins at 7 p.m.

Sunday the grand entry begins at 1 p.m. followed by the traditional giveaway.

Buck Sheena will be the pow wow host and Jim Edgar will be the arena director.

The Chief William Father’s Day Pow Wow is a family friendly event. No alcohol or drugs is permitted.
