(Photo submitted) Another graduation is in the books for Williams Lake, and it was really great to see the celebrations return to a large, pre-pandemic format.
Formal ceremonies for Lake City Secondary students kicked off Friday evening June 9 in Rink 1 at Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.
Most of this year’s 226 graduating class took part in the celebrations, donning caps and gowns and entering the rink to the sounds of traditional Indigenous drumming and singing. Speeches were kept short and sweet, and by the time it was all said and done, all the students had received their graduation certificates, scholarships and bursaries in two hours and 10 minutes.
More than $250k was awarded to students through scholarships and bursaries; an incredibly generous amount for a community the size of Williams Lake. Thank you to those donors.
On the following day, Saturday, June 10, all graduates in Williams Lake were treated to a community celebration by way of the annual Dry Grad Parade and evening festivities.
The rain held off for graduates and the community to enjoy the parade and take pictures.
Afterwards, graduates were invited to attend Dry Grad celebrations at CMRC where grads were treated to a Las Vegas-themed evening which included a fully decorated Rink 2. Grads could dance, get air brush tattoos, order a mocktail or play blackjack or roulette. In Rink 1 there were bouncy castles, laser tag as well as a popular mechanical bull contest.
The free food was non-stop and amazing throughout the evening and organizers and volunteers should be commended for their efforts to put on such a successful labour of love for all the grads. Congratulations everyone.
