The Daybreak Rotary’s Stampede Parade Saturday is shaping up to be a lot of fun with several entries by dance groups, lots of musical entries, vintage vehicles, mascots and clowns, says parade entry co-ordinator Lori Macala.

As of press time Thursday afternoon there were 75 entries with more coming in ever hour.

Rudy Johnson is the honourary parade marshal for the parade that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1.

Daybreak Rotary’s Stampede Parade is also being changed up a bit this year in the interest of safety, adds Rotary director Tom Foley.

The regular route, as in past years will be followed, except that instead of turning off of Borland Street at Eighth Avenue to Oliver Street the parade will turn down Seventh Avenue to Oliver Street.

Foley said the Eighth Avenue route adjacent to the mall, the liquor store and Save-On-Foods is too congested with traffic before the parade for the volunteers working security and manning the barricades to manage safely.

The new route allows people to access the mall, liquor store and Save-On-Foods before and during the parade, Foley said.

“The old parade route did not allow access to these business areas before and during the parade.”

He said the change in parade route has been considered for several years with the assistance of Community Policing which has been a great source of volunteers for the parade for many years.

With the old route he said large gaps would also form in the parade, so hopefully the new route will correct that problem.

Additional viewing space will be provided at the end of the route which now extends along First Avenue all the way to Cameron Street.

The new route runs along Fourth Avenue from Proctor Street, turning left on Borland Street, right on Seventh Avenue, right on Oliver Street, right again on First Avenue and finishing up at Cameron Street.
