The city of Williams Lake is hosting two events for families to enjoy Saturday, May 25, with the city hosting the Williams Lake Fire Department open house and public works yard open house.

Both set to begin at 10 a.m., the WLFD open house will be at the fire hall at 230 Hodgson Road, while the he municipal services department invites everyone to the city’s public works yard at 555 Second Avenue North for its annual celebration in recognition of National Public Works Week (May 19-25).

“We had such a great time during last year’s Public Works Open House seeing all of the families out, and the wide smiles on the kids’ faces when they got a chance to get behind the controls of some of our heavy equipment,” said Cindy Walters, Municipal Services Coordinator.

The public works open house will once again feature the chance for children and youth to try out some of the city’s heavy machinery, as well as equipment rides, photo opportunities, light refreshments, hot dogs and snacks and flower planting. There will also be an opportunity to learn all about the city’s municipal services department on topics like waste and recycling collection, snow removal, road maintenance, sewer and water and more.

At the WLFD open house, guests will have the chance to explore fire trucks, take part in live demonstrations, learn all about fire safety and participate in a mini firefighter course for kids. There will also be smokies, hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn and drinks for sale.

“This is a great opportunity to see the services your local fire department provides in an interactive and fun way, as well as a chance to see all the different equipment we utilize to help keep the community safe,” said Cory Boyd, fire prevention/training officer.

The public works open house goes until 1 p.m. The WLFD open house wraps up at 1 p.m, with a Firefighters Challenge to follow from 1-2 p.m. outside the fire hall. Both events are free to attend.
