Carla Bullinger’s job is to connect with community agencies, be aware of the wide range of programs and services offered in our community, and provide support and information regarding the literacy and essential skills needs of their clients. Here, she answers a few questions about what she does and what she is reading:

Q: What is the favourite part of your job?

A: I love working with people and hearing about the great work they are doing in our community. There are many individuals, agencies, and businesses that are incredibly focussed on and committed to meeting the needs of their clients and community, and that’s what makes Williams Lake a great place to live. I enjoy the challenge of looking at individual programs and services being offered and seeing how we can connect them to other activities happening in the community. This way we strengthen the work we are all doing.

Q: What is the most challenging part of your job?

A: The most challenging part is that many people still don’t think literacy is an issue.

We often assume that all adults know how to read, write and use information when the reality is that more than 25 per cent of adults struggle with everyday reading and writing tasks.

As a society, we have put a lot of effort into making our communities more accessible. We need to think about how we can make our community, businesses, and organizations more accessible to people struggling with low literacy and numeracy skills.

Q: What are you reading right now?

A: The Scorch Trials by James Dashner. It is the second book in the Maze Runner trilogy. My 11-year-old son recommended this book to me, and it is a page turner!

My sons recommend a lot of books that I then read. It gives us a common frame of reference. We talk about what we like and didn’t like about a book, and it provides a lot of topics for discussion.
