Williams Lake’s Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is hosting an open house as a way to bring community together and give people an opportunity to learn about their programs.

The event is Thursday, Feb. 15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature stations throughout the school, giving people a chance to ask questions, learn more about what TRU has to offer and participate in activities related to biology, welding, nursing and more.

This is the second year TRU has hosted the open house after biology professor Christian Lass noticed people in the community unaware of all the campus has to offer.

“The initial idea was to bring the university closer to the community,” explained Lass. “I realized that by talking to people from Williams Lake, they don’t know what we’re doing and what we’re offering.”

A new feature to this year’s open house will be the business stations. TRU is providing tables for businesses to come set up their own booth, allowing people to learn more about work opportunities.

“It makes sense that we connect [the community] with the businesses, and the businesses can connect with the people coming,” said Lass.

Community members will also be treated to free chili and a bun, and have an opportunity to see some of the biology department’s new features, including a new seawater tank, animals, plants and fungi, said Lass.

For businesses interested in joining the open house event, contact Mehgan Atchison at matchison@tru.ca.
