Darren Ballegeer is thrilled and amazed that one copy of his new book Cancer Coach has raised $500 for families fighting cancer in the Williams Lake area.

Ballegeer completed writing his book in Williams Lake and received copies from the printers just days before the the Shine On fundraiser for families fighting cancer that was held at the Elks Hall, March 25.

He gave a short talk about the purpose of his book during the live auction portion of the event.

“We were amazed by the amount,” Ballegeer says. “Kane Fraser made the $500 bid.”

Ballegeer and his wife, Elena Miramar, have been spending the winter house sitting for friends in Williams Lake

Ballegeer said he felt compelled to finish the book in time for the Shine On fundraiser which raised more than $34,000 to help local families with the cost of travel and accommodation while receiving treatment for cancer.

Ballegeer says he will now take the Cancer Coach on a cross-Canada tour starting with a book launch and signing at the Williams Lake Library this Saturday, April 8 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

He will read from his book, answer people’s questions and share some healthy, indulgent cake.

Ballegeer started documenting and writing Cancer Coach after being diagnosed with stage 3C melanoma in February 2014.

While searching for the best treatment and follow-up options, Ballegeer consulted with specialists in 19 clinics and hospitals specializing in cancer treatment located in five cities: Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

“I chose to take the challenge head on by learning as much as I could about cancer, treatments, and how personal change was central to healing,” Ballegeer says.

“Now cancer-free, I have more energy and vitality than I had 20 years ago and I enjoy a very active lifestyle with my angelic wife Elena.”

During his book tour he plans to give away copies of his book to cancer patients in the hospitals and clinics in Canada and the U.S. that he visited during his own quest for healing.

“My goal is to re-visit the many waiting rooms and clinics I was a patient at and as many other clinics as possible,” Ballegeer says.

“I’m very excited about making this kind of direct impact for people who need guidance and a strong belief they will win.”

Ballegeer is already working on his next book: Cancer Navigator — Your Guide for a Successful Healing Journey.
