Learn to identify birds that visit your backyard next month with the Williams Lake Field Naturalists.

Learn to identify birds that visit your backyard next month with the Williams Lake Field Naturalists.

The naturalists are hosting a Great Backyard Bird Count event at Scout Island Nature Centre, Saturday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. This family oriented event for all ages is provided free of charge.

“Learn to identify those fascinating feathered visitors with local birding experts Cathy Koot and Paula Laita,” invites Jenny Noble.

They will give a short introduction to bird identification using frozen and stuffed specimens, to compare with pictures in bird books.

Then the group will take a walk around Scout Island to spot the favourite hang-outs of the various birds and play an identification game.

Noble notes that if people are unable to attend the bird identification workshop they can still become citizen scientists by counting birds at their feeders from Feb. 17 to 20 and submitting the findings to http://gbbc.birdcount.org/.

To register for the event call the nature centre at 250-398-8532.
