Five choirs will come together for the fourth annual Parade of Choirs this Sunday, Feb 27.The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cariboo Bethel Church on Western Avenue.Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to the Hough Memorial Cancer Society for the purchase of cancer detection equipment for Cariboo Memorial Hospital.“We started the Parade of Choirs as a ‘lets get together for the fun of it’ thing,” says organizer Bill McDonald from the Cariboo Men’s Choir. “Then I saw an article about the Hough Memorial society and thought that since we are community choirs it would be nice to have the event about a cause that helps the community.”Ever since that first year he says the Parade of Choirs has raised more than $7,000 for the Hough Memorial Cancer Society.He says many of the groups featured this Sunday have prepared new songs for the event.Each group will sing about six songs each and there will be an intermission and a grande finale with all five choirs coming together to sing Hope for Resolution arranged by Paul Coldwell and Sean Ivory. The song is a tribute to South African peacemaker Nelson Mandela, a fitting finish to the concert considering the peoples’ revolutions happening in countries across northern Africa this week.“It is really a cross between a hymn and a song with an African beat,” McDonald says.The concert opens with the Cariboo Children’s Choir directed by Jesse Chapin singing O’ Canada. Some of their songs will be Chim Chim Cheree, Sing, and Sherman and Sherman.Next up will be the Cariboo Men’s Choir conducted by Carl Johnson. McDonald says some of the new songs they have prepared are Yesterday by the Beetles, Along the Street where You Live from My Fair Lady, and the Welsh Lullaby.The Senior Carolers directed by Georgina Lazzarotto will be on stage next followed by Quintet Plus directed by Jesse Chapin and Eclectica from 100 Mile House directed by Andrew Halladay. He says some of the new songs on the program for Quintet Plus include Dream a Little Dream, I’m Going to Sing, The Banquet and Fugue. At press time McDonald said he didn’t yet have the programs for the Seniors’ Choir or Eclectica but didn’t want to reveal all of the songs so there will still be some surprises in the program for people.
