Aboriginal Day Celebrations coming up next Tuesday celebrate First Nations culture in this region with a parade and all sorts of fun activities for children and families in Boitanio Park.
The Northern Shuswap Tribal Council, hosting the activities, invites everyone in the community to come and join the fun, says event spokesperson Marg Casey.
Activities start with a parade at 10 a.m. gathering at the Elks Hall and proceeding along First Avenue turning right along Oliver Street and left onto Seventh Avenue to Boitanio Park.
From 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the fun will include a bouncy castle, lahal and other games, craft and art activities, bike demonstrations, feather painting, face painting, a hockey booth and more.
New this year there will be a bannock making competition from noon to 2 p.m. on the main stage.
“Also, new this year will be a Summer Solstice Ceremony by the Secwepemc Health Caucus starting at 11:15 a.m. also on the main stage,” Casey says.
Participants include Xat’sull Heritage Village, Williams Lake Library Summer Reading Club, Strong Start, Little Moccasins Daycare, Little Chiefs Primary School, School District 27 First Nations Role Models, Chilcotin Metis Association and more.
Vendors will be there with offerings of food including popular Cody’s Bannock.
