MLA’s Corner

As we approach the final three weeks of the last legislative session before the upcoming provincial election, it has been a busy time in Victoria. My focus has been on raising the concerns of Cariboo-Chilcotin residents on critical issues like health care, public safety and affordability.

Even though the schedule in Victoria is hectic, I’m back in the Cariboo-Chilcotin every chance I get. Recently, I had the opportunity to highlight everything the Cariboo-Chilcotin offers by bringing one of our Legislative Interns, Lauren Parry, to visit. For the past two months, Lauren has been contributing to our Victoria team and learning about provincial politics.

A critical component of the internship program is the opportunity to spend a week shadowing an MLA in their constituency to learn about local issues and how communities are impacted differently throughout B.C. Originally from the Lower Mainland, she chose to come to the Cariboo – somewhere she’s never been before – to widen her perspective.

Our week included celebrating Vaisakhi in Williams Lake, stopping by the historic 153 Mile Store, visiting Ulkatcho First Nation at Anahim Lake, and attending the Canadian Mental Health Association Cariboo Chilcotin Branch formal fundraiser in 100 Mile House.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true trip to the Chilcotin without attending the Williams Lake Spring Classic Rodeo. I extend heartfelt thanks to all the participants, volunteers and organizers who made this event a success.

I was also thrilled to celebrate, in the Legislature, the addition of the Williams Lake Mustangs to the KIJHL for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The arrival of the Mustangs promises to ignite a spirited rivalry with the 100 Mile House Wranglers.

Thanks to the new owners of the Williams Lake Mustangs for bringing their team to the Cariboo-Chilcotin. Let’s welcome the new players, their families, and the fans. The Mustangs’ debut marks a significant moment for our community, adding a new chapter to our rich hockey history in Williams Lake and bringing us together in new, exciting ways.
