I was at the Guns and Hoses charity hockey game in Ashcroft on Jan. 25, and it was absolutely phenomenal. This hockey game raised more than $10,000 for the Ashcroft HUB community non-profit. Kudos to all those involved! The proceeds are going towards replacing the roof of the HUB’s building, which is more than 60 years old.
Each and every week, there are events throughout the entire region of Cariboo-Chilcotin that are largely volunteer-driven. I am grateful to the hundreds of volunteers that do so much to forge connection and community in rural B.C.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, I’ll be in Savona eating baked beans, ham and salad at the Savona Area Seniors’ Society and the Savona Community Association’s bean supper fundraiser, which benefits the local fire rescue team.
There is even another Guns and Hoses hockey game in Williams Lake between our RCMP and fire department on Friday, March 21st at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Centre. This game will raise funds for KidSport Williams Lake, an organization which helps families pay for the cost of sports fees for their children.
In April, the 100 Mile House Skating Club will be hosting Olympic medalist figure skater Elvis Stojko for an incredible show as part of the club’s 50th anniversary. Children and adults alike learn to skate and become confident on the ice at the 100 Mile House Skating Club.
There are a number of rodeos and barn dances coming up, such as the Interior Rodeo Event Association Spring Classic, which I am proud to support. I was also a past director and longtime volunteer of the Williams Lake Stampede Association, and I was honoured to be named their Volunteer of the Year in 2019.
Every time I hear someone complain that there’s nothing to do in our region, I am always shocked at those comments! There is no end to the community-led initiatives in Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, Ashcroft, Savona, Clinton, Cache Creek, and beyond. And it’s never too late to get involved and volunteer for a cause you care about in Cariboo-Chilcotin. Sometimes we all need a reminder to stay active, engaged, and social during these colder months.
Once again, a huge thank you to all of the volunteers in our local communities. You really do make our region a special place to live.
