The Williams Lake Storm under-11 boys development team were in action during the May long weekend at the Kamloops Slurpee Cup.

The team finished with three wins and one loss defeating two teams from Kamloops and a team from the East Kootenays. Their only falter was versus Nelson.

Coach Graham Fulton said the team mustered up an incredible effort having being used to playing in five- to nine-degree weather at home to a stifling 31C in Kamloops.

“The boys battled hard and got better every game,” he said. “Passing, positioning and putting balls through to space for our striker were elements that really came along over the four games.”

The team, coached by Dani Wood, Fulton, Don Giroux and Steve Keller, joined more than 140 teams in Kamloops for the tournament spread among various divisions.

“In U11 and U12 they don’t keep scores or standings,” Fulton said. “It’s part of the long-term development of the players. You just play your four games and that’s it.”

The team competed in an earlier indoor tournament in Quesnel in April, however, the Slurpee Cup was the team’s first outdoor tournament of the season.

They’ll next compete in Cariboo Youth Soccer League action on June 18 in Prince George, before wrapping up the CYSL season June 25 in Quesnel. The U11 Storm also plan to attend a tournament in Salmon Arm from Aug. 25-27.
