Golfers escaped the worst of the weekend’s weather as the annual Williams Lake Golf and Tennis Club Championships went off without a hitch Saturday and Sunday.

“It went really well,” said WLGTC assistant manager Morgan Day. “We got pretty lucky as far as the weather goes. It was supposed to be pretty crumby, but we only had a little bit of rain for about two holes on Saturday, and it just spit here and there on Sunday and overall was pretty dry.”

Fifty-three golfers — 38 men and 15 women — competed at the tournament in their respective divisions.

On the men’s side it was Day firing back-to-back scores of 65 and 69 for a combined eight-under-par 134, winning the men’s club championship. Finishing as the runner up was Jarod Golightly with a combined 138 (72, 66).

“He [Golightly] gave me a good run,” Day said. “He shot five under on the front nine and had a couple birdies and bogies coming in on the back, so he tightened the gap, that’s for sure.”

The men’s low net champion, meanwhile, was Tom Merrick with a two-day score of 137.

On the women’s side it was Lisa Kerley winning the club championship after rounds of 85 and 86.

The women’s net champion was Jodie Mason with a two-day score of 143.

Dave Lauzon, meanwhile, was the senior men’s championship with a combined 154 (77, 77), while Dayton Long picked up junior club championship. Runner up for the senior men’s championship was John Pickard.

The WLGTC still has three tournaments left before it closes for the year.

The first will be this Saturday for the first Sid Davis Memorial Golf Tournament, where 144 players are registered.

The following weekend will be the course’s annual Big Hole Tournament, which is also full at 144 golfers.

On Oct. 13, two days before closing, the course will host its Fall Ball Challenge.

Registration is currently underway for the Fall Ball Challenge and anyone interested can call the pro shop at 250-392-6026.
