Last weekend the Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association hosted the finale of the three-race provincial series championships, bringing out motocross racers from Nanaimo to Prince George.
Effectively marking the end of the formal motocross season, riders of all ages and skill levels, from eight years of age to 65, took to the tracks despite a muddy and wet weekend.
Spirits remained high, however, as riders rode through the cold and muck showing impressive skill while jumping and riding to fast times in their heats.
Brock Hoyer, a longtime rider, WLDRA director and one of the organizers of the association’s event, admitted they weren’t dealt the best hand in terms of weather, but said despite that the track remained awesome.
“It seems like everyone likes having fun in the mud. You know, I get older and I have to wash my own bike, but I love getting out there and as soon as my tires get dirty it’s all smiles and having fun,” Hoyer said. “That’s the biggest thing. I think everyone’s enjoying themselves.”
Events like this are huge for the City of Williams Lake, Hoyer noted.
He said it gives people a chance to come up and see what he and his fellow riders do, something he is always happy to see.
“It’s a full family sport, everyone comes together and half of the time, most of the time, people come because it’s such a great atmosphere. We’ll go camping, dirt biking, share the same passion and help one another out,” Hoyer said.

While he said there is one more formal event for motocross this season, he said by and large most riders would now be making the switchover for Areanacross in November. Hoyer himself will now be preparing for snocross or snow biking, as its more commonly known.
He will be attending the X-Games in Aspen, Colorado again this year in January and hopes to bring home a gold medal for the second time.

As practice he hopes to attend some earlier events down in the States just before X Games.
The first round of the AMSOIL Isoc Deluth Championships Hoyer is competing in will take place Nov. 22 on America’s Thanksgiving.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to get some B.C snow biking series kicking off again too this year, so we’re waiting for those dates. I’m also considering maybe trying to some of the Canadian Snocross series over in Ontario and Quebec as well,” Hoyer said.
