Young archers from Williams Lake travelled to Prince George last Sunday for the B.C. Archery Association Junior Olympic Program Regional Championships.

In all, five JOP archers forsook last weekend’s Sunday portion of the Cariboo Archers Flatfield 3D Shoot to compete.

“The results were impressive for our kids,” said their coach, Al Campsall. “The Junior Olympic Program pits kids of similar abilities against each other instead of age categories. Because of that, some of our kids were competing well above their age categories.”

Nine-year-old Emersyn Sanford and 11-year-old Joelle Thurow competed against 15 to 19 year olds and still ended with a seventh and third place, respectively against kids from across B.C.

Ty Thurow, 14, landed in third place against 16 to 18 year olds and, in doing so, narrowly missed the B.C. record for his actual age category by just one point.

Up-and-comers Taryn Hinsche and Ty Waterhouse also represented Williams Lake well, Campsall said.

Hinsche ended up in second place in B.C., while Waterhouse beat all comers to win his first B.C. championship.

“We are very proud of all five of these athletes,” Campsall said.

The Cariboo Archers are now getting excited about its annual Cariboo Archers Outdoor 3D Shoot May 13-14.

“It will be a fun shoot for all age and ability archers,” Campsall said. “We even have bows and arrows to lend young people. Some folks will treat this as a competition, but most will simply come out as a family and have a lot of fun. The Saturday afternoon novelty shoots are always a highlight.”
