The Williams Lake Gymnastics Club exceeded expectations March 17 at one of their largest meets of the year, the Twisters Invitational in Abbotsford.

Hosted at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park, 11 of the WLGC’s competitive gymnasts impressed coaches Raeanna Brown and Michaela Newberry while facing some of the toughest competition in the province.

“We were the only northern team that went down,” Brown said. “Not even Prince George sent a team. They were really good. Some placed which was, I think, surprising for them even.”

From the WLGC, Ava Johnson, Camdyn Cochran, Shaelynn Dyck, Cali Mackinnon, Isabelle McMath, Raquel Tomelin, Nya Chutskoff, Allysia Irawan, Emily Swan and Kylie Syme competed.

“It was pretty tough,” Shaelynn said. “There were so many people and the judges were pretty strict.”

Emily said she surprised herself with how well she did considering the size of the meet, while Camdyn added it was fun to be a part of the competition.

“There were a lot of people there and the gym was really big,” Nya noted.

WLGC athletes compete in the Junior Olympic  (JO) Competitive Program ranging in levels from one to four. Lower levels are graded with gold, silver or bronze ribbons, while higher levels receive a score out of 10 in each individual event.
