Soccer players in the lakecity expressed their love of the game this past weekend at the Valentine’s Co-ed Soccer Tournament.

Four teams laced up their cleats for the tournament, and all came to a head Saturday afternoon with the semifinal and final matchups in the Williams Lake secondary gym.

The four teams — the Flying Fultons, the Young Guns, Funk’s Rustlers and the Fossil Fools — played three round robin games against one another pitting first versus fourth and second versus third in the semifinals.

In the first semifinal match it was the Flying Fultons and the Fossil Fools playing to an overtime shootout. After both Alyson Levens scored for the Fultons and Ashley Turatus scored for the Fossil Fools the game was decided in a 3-1 shootout win for the Flying Fultons.

Next, the Young Guns and Funk’s Rustlers squared off. Haylie Shoults and Alex Page both scored for the Young Guns, but Ashley Stewart (2), Pam Lawrence (2) and Ashley Callendar responded for the Rustlers to take a 5-2 win.

The final showcased two evenly matched squads and needed overtime to be decided. Unfortunately for the Flying Fultons, the overtime winner came as an own goal — the team’s second unlucky own goal of the contest.

The other scorer in Funk’s Rustlers 3-2 overtime win was Stewart, while Nicole Therrien and Trenisa Durfeld found the twine for the Flying Fultons.

All tournament proceeds, and Funk’s Rustlers tournament prize money, were donated back and will stay in the lakecity, and will be used to help construct the Esler Playground Project.
