The death of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney dominated the news recently, and rightfully so. He was not always popular during his nine years as PM, but since his death, his political colleagues, friends, and pundits, and many citizens remember him fondly and aren’t shy about saying so publicly. His record for keeping his promises to make Canada a better place is impressive. We need a few leaders like him these days.

Will spring come early? Or even on time? A wee murder of crows has been gathering in a leafless tree outside my window on sunny days. Do they know something or are they just hoping?

Going through some old papers the other day I came across a column I’d written years ago complaining about the weather. No date on it but it was written on a typewriter so it was before computers. We were wondering about the weather then too. I wrote “it’s snowing and wintery one day, sunny and springlike the next. Sometimes it’s both on the same day.”

Are we just having the usual contrary Cariboo weather?

Regular readers of this column must have an inkling that I believe the climate is changing and we humans are hurrying things along. Polls report most Canadians believe in climate change but aren’t willing to make any drastic changes in their lifestyles to do anything about it.

One of my pet peeves is that single use plastic grocery bags are a no-no, but almost everything we buy to put in the reusable cloth bags is sealed in non-reusable plastic.

We’re concerned about the damage burning fossil fuels does to the environment, but according to experts minute bits of plastic have found their way into everything, including our food and water. Why aren’t we having fits about that?
