FRENCH CONNECTION: Generosity of spirit

Four things on my mind this week, Easter, Elks Hall, Princess Kate and generosity of spirit.

It’s Easter time. It might even be springtime. Be happy. Put your troubles aside and enjoy the weekend.

BC Housing is doing its best to solve a problem by turning the Elks Hall into a temporary residence for the homeless. The proposal is not going down so well for a variety of reasons. Some say it’s the wrong place (NIMBY), others say it won’t solve the problems. Maybe the naysayers, along with those who support the project, could get together with BC Housing and the city’s social groups to find a way to effectively deal with the all the issues associated with homelessness and drug and alcohol overuse. Let’s get on with it.

The British media was quick to howl “conspiracy” when the Princess of Wales was silent following her operation. Turned out she was getting her act together after a cancer diagnosis. Surely members of the Royal family deserve a wee bit of privacy in some circumstances.

Generosity of spirit is a phrase we don’t often hear. Generosity is one of the virtues, the others being courage, honesty, compassion, humility, patience, gratitude, justice and wisdom. We hear from people demanding justice, but not so much about the other virtues.

Kindness has been in the news this month. The third week in February was Kindness Week, and friends and foes of our recently deceased former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney have been eulogizing him for his generosity of spirit (kindness) in “giving freely “without expecting any favours in return.

Generosity and compassion are sometime hard to find. Too often we are judgmental, stingy, small-minded, or just plain mean.

What if we made the rest of 2024 Kindness Year?
