December 8, 1964 ~ June 23, 2017

Michael Reiner died suddenly while fishing and hiking at a place he loved; he was 52. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Fassbender) and children Hannah and Morgan; parents Karl and Elke Reiner (Williams Lake), sister Regina Reiner (Williams Lake); mother-in-law, Sharron Fassbender, brothers-in-law, Kirk Fassbender, Todd Fassbender (Patsy) and Colin Fassbender; nieces and nephews, Erika, Wyatt, Katie, and Michelle.

Mike grew up in Williams Lake; where he developed a love of fishing and hiking and a curiosity about animals and habitats. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of sport. These passions continued throughout his life.

Mike earned a degree in Biology at the University of Victoria and later a diploma in Water Quality, and became a professional Agrologist. He worked for the Ministry of Environment for many years, most recently in the mining sector.

Mike rowed for the University of Victoria and the junior National team and competed throughout Canada and internationally. He loved the serenity of being in a wooden boat on a calm lake. Mike designed/ built several boats, all featuring sliding seats and his custom oars.

His family spent countless summer days in his favorite boat, “three winters”.

Mike coached at the Kelowna Rowing Club and later his children’s soccer teams. So many kids caught their first fish with Mike at his home on Shannon Lake. Mike was a quiet man who loved to be surrounded by the hubbub of his family and friends.

Mike was a man of integrity, a listener who chose to do the “right thing” even when it wasn’t the easy path. Mike was a protector; his gentle manner and quiet strength was constant.

But his favorite role was that of father and husband. He was so proud of his children; they are his greatest accomplishment, and he was excited for them as they moved into their adult lives. Mike adored his wife, and she him.

The Celebration of Life was held Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at the West Kelowna Yacht Club.

Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
