Passed peacefully at Deni House, Williams Lake, BC of natural causes.

Survived by loving wife Jessie (nee Smith) of 69 years; Sons David, Eric (Anne), Fred and daughter Karen (Chris); Sisters Ruth Weburn (Fred), Doris Gray, and brother C. Ernest (Clare); Grandsons Eric (PPCLI) of Shilo, MB, Adam of Barrhead, AB and granddaughter Samantha of Edmonton, AB; Step-grandson Charles Scott (Jacquelin) and great granddaughters, Isabel and Eloise. Predeceased by granddaughter Jamie-Lyn.

Born in Merridale, MB to Forest Ranger Gestur Hjalmarson, M.M.B. and Winnifred (nee Wilson). The family moved to Winniposis, MB in 1928 where they purchased a Red & White Store, Gestur serving 2 terms as Mayor.

In 1941 Gestur joined the Veterans Guard of Canada and moved the family to Victoria, BC where Fred joined the Canadian Army, RCE and served in Europe with the Canadian 2nd Division. Returning to Victoria in 1945, he worked as a carpenter, then a faller, high rigger and logger. He married Jessie in 1948 and moved to Blubber Bay, Texada with BC Cement Co. as a driller, blaster and heavy equipment operator.

In 1957, now with three children, the family moved to Cobble Hill, BC, still with BC Cement Co., where he worked as a Millwright until retiring in 1980, to "Blue Lupine" Ranch at 150 Mile House, BC. He built a log house and raised registered Polled Herefords until health forced a second retirement to Flett Road in Williams Lake, BC in 2006.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Duncan, BC in Spring 2018. Donations in Fred's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Children's Funds may be made in lieu of flowers.
