SPCA receives helping hands

Williams Lake SPCA manager Liz Dighton is grateful with how the community has responded to the organization’s broken boiler.

On Thursday the SPCA put a call out for blankets and donations of cash — the former to keep the animals warm after the building’s boiler quit and the latter to help pay for the $3,500 plus tax piece of equipment.

Sandman Williams Lake answered the call donating 15 boxes of old towels to the organization.

“I just feel really strongly about supporting the SPCA,” says Sandman’s general manager Arlene Dewilde.

By Monday, Dighton was happy to report that the community had responded to the calls for help with generosity.

“The response was overwhelming. It was just amazing,” she says.

The SPCA is in good shape for blankets; donations to the boiler are still being accepted. Dighton hasn’t yet added up the money that has come in but estimates it to be around $2,500. Donations are important to ensure that the organization doesn’t have to pay for the boiler out of its education fund.

“I want to make sure we’re not dipping into funding for human education materials,” she says. I don’t want to rob Peter to pay Paul.”

The SPCA is open Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can be reached by calling 250-392-2179.
