A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Williams Lake area with the chance of heavy rainfall beginning late Friday morning.

“A watch means we are not 100 per cent sure but we want people to be preparing themselves for an event,” said Doug Lundquist, warning preparedness meteoroligist at Environment Canada. “The issue is with the spring freshet and spring runoff the creeks are pretty high and if we do get these storms later this afternoon or this evening they could come with 10 to 20 millimetres of rain.”

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, Environment Canada noted, adding large hail can damage property and cause injury.

The public is asked to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

To report severe weather, send an e-mail to ec.tempetepacifique-pacificstorm.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

The high predicted for Friday is 19C with a low of 2C.
