Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty offered his congratulations to the new leader of the Conservative Party Andrew Scheer who he said will empower the Conservatives to a victory in the next federal election.

“Today, more so than ever, the Conservative Party stands united,” Doherty said in a statement issued Monday. “We have taken the first step toward defeating the Liberal Government in 2019.”

Doherty offered his “heartfelt congratulations” to all candidates who took part in the leadership race, saying their dedication to public service is admirable.

“You have contributed to a stronger, more united Conservative Party,” Doherty said.

Scheer became the new leader Saturday during a leadership convention held in Toronto.

He was first elected Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu’Appelle in 2002, defeating the longest-serving member of the House of Commons.

Holding the position of Speaker of the House of Commons for four years, Scheer became the youngest Speaker in Canadian history.

He was re-elected consecutively and since 2015 has served as the Official Opposition House Leader.

According to the Conservative Party’s website, Scheer studied history and politics at the University of Ottawa and the University of Regina.

He passed the Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker program and began his working career in the insurance industry in Regina.

“As a father of five, Scheer has been known all his life for being true to his conservative principles in politics and out,” the Conservative website noted.
