Construction on what will become the city’s tallest building got underway this week, with the 36-unit addition to Glen Arbour on Oliver Street.

The seniors housing project, five years in the making so far, received the final green light by way of a city building permit Tuesday morning (April 30).

Glen Arbor Cariboo Park Home Society president Walt Cobb said he was thrilled to see the project finally started and the contract given to local construction company, Lauren Brothers Construction.

“Proud to be local and we’re very happy to be working on this project,” said Marty Lauren, who was on site Tuesday.

The five-storey building is scheduled for completion in October, 2025, with applications already being submitted by seniors hopeful to live there.

Centrally located, residents can get everything they need within walking distanced from Glen Arbor. The existing building is 100 per cent subsidized housing, while the new addition will include 20 per cent market rental units.

The project is expected to cost in the neighbourhood of $15 million, with funding provided by both the provincial and federal government — BC housing and Community Housing Initiative — as well as $1.14 million from the Glen Arbor Cariboo Park Home Society in land equity.
