The Williams Lake Film Club will show the film Samson & Delilah this Friday, Feb. 17. It will be shown at our new venue, the Central Cariboo Arts Centre, at 7 p.m.
Released in 2009 Samson & Delilah is truly an Art House film. It is written and directed by Warwick Thornton, an Australian Aboriginal.
Languages used in this film are English and Aboriginal. It falls under the category of drama/romance, runs for 141 minutes and is rated PG 16.
This is his first feature film, and he carefully selected a cast of first time actors from his aboriginal community on the Reserve, Alice Springs, somewhere in the Northern Territories in the Central Australian Desert.
It is possibly the most realistic story you will ever find about modern life on the Reserve.
Samson is 15 years old and bored. He begins his days sniffing gasoline to get high, then hangs out with his friends goofing off and getting into minor trouble.
What else is there to do in this shabby town? Delilah follows a different path.
She helps her nana (her grandmother in real life) to create valuable aboriginal art, which they sell for a pittance to tourists to get by.
It takes some time for Delilah to return Samson’s feelings for her, but after they both become victims of violence they decide to look together for a town where they can lead a better life. It is a journey of survival. Lost, unwanted and alone they discover that life is not always fair, but also that love never judges.
Samson & Delilah won 21 awards and received 13 additional nominations.
The film, together with the director and main actors, was invited to Cannes for a screening at the world famous Film Festival.
Warwick Thornton won the Golden Camera. That must have been quite the experience for the director and his main actors to spend some time in Cannes, such a vastly different world from their own.
Free refreshments are available after the film. This gives you a great chance to discuss what you just have seen or simply to catch up on what your friends have been up to in the meantime. See you on Friday!
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $9 regular, $8 for Film Club members, and $6 for seniors (65+ please) and students, high school and TRU.

Samson & Delilah will be our last film before our fabulous Cariboo Chilcotin Film Fest.
This event will take place on Friday, March 10, at the Gibraltar Room.
