I was bummed that I had to miss the inaugural Sunday Biscuits session at the Bean Counter, but it sounds like it went off without a hitch.

Sober Becky made the trip down from Prince George to kick off the summer-long brunchtime music series with local Ilan Piemer. For the second installment of Sunday Biscuits, Tanya Gallagher and yours truly will be sharing the stage with Red Monkey Black King, Sunday July 17 from 10 a.m. 2 p.m.

I first met Tanya Gallagher when she made a trip to Vancouver to record her first full-length solo record.

Since growing up in Pensacola, Florida, this was the first time she had been that far north.

It even snowed during her visit, which is rare in the tropics of Vancouver.

Shortly after the visit, she found herself packing up to move, in pursuit of a PhD in Landscape Ecology from UBC.

For the next year or so we spent lots of time together woodshedding new songs, playing bluegrass on back porches, and doing tongue-in-cheek covers of early 90s pop songs.

It’s always been a delight playing with Tanya.

We managed to sneak into the ArtsWells lineup in 2014 as a duo, and haven’t often had the chance to play since then.

I told her about the Sunday Biscuits sessions at the Bean Counter and she was stoked to be included in the lineup.

She’s almost ready to release an EP that we started working on together in 2014. For Sunday Biscuits we’ll play a few tunes from that new record, some songs from her old record, and if I have any say in the matter at least a couple cheeky cover tunes.

Joining Tanya and I, Ilan Peimer and James Still make up the electrifying blues rock duo Red Monkey Black King.

Drawing influence from The Black Keys and The Arctic Monkeys, expect a variety of rockin cover and original tunes.

Ilan managed to hop on board for two consecutive Biscuit sessions, so he promised RMBK will provide something completely different from his solo set last week.

The Sunday Biscuits series is now in full swing until the end of August.

Music is a suggested donation of $5, and nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds. No advance tickets necessary, just come on down between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sundays from July 10 until Aug. 28.
