Students from Canoe Creek transported precious cargo they have been caring for all winter long from their rural school Wednesday morning all the way to Williams Lake.

The children, who ranged in grades from K to 6, and teacher Kathleen Singbeil participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Stream to Sea program where students care for salmon eggs in their classroom and watch them grow as they transform into salmon fry.

Singbeil said the program offered an excellent hands’ on experience for the students, all of whom rely on salmon as a natural food source.

“It’s so great for the kids,” Singbeil said. “They were super engaged by it.”

While having a picnic lunch, however, the students said they weren’t very happy to see some trout come long and eat their newly released salmon fry.

“Some of them thought it was cool, some of them were bummed out,” Singbeil said of the ways of Mother Nature.
